noun – 1. a floating ball attached to a lever to regulate the level of a liquid in a tank, etc. Float-operated switch a shut-off valve operated by a float 2. a hollow structure fixed below an aircraft that allows it to float on water. Also called pontoon, verb – to remain on the surface of a fluid without sinking. Because of the air-tight nature of the fuselage, most large aircraft will float for some time before sinking.
